Guard
against theft. It is quite easy for a thief to pick
up a briefcase and disappear into the crowd in the
busy atmosphere of an airport, or even replace a
briefcase with a lookalike. So pay attention to
your hand luggage from the time you arrive at the
airport until you have cleared the necessary formalities
and are in the departure lounge. Things are relatively
safe there given that only bonafide passengers and
staff have access to this area.
Another
vulnerable spot is when you are leaving the airport,
for this is where thieves lurk, looking out for
the passenger who is uncertain of his next move
in unfamiliar territory. Vulnerable-looking travellers
are often offered low-cost rides or help with finding
a hotel. It is best to avoid anyone who approaches
you in this manner.
The
most foolproof approach is to keep everything on
your trolley with the handbag/ briefcase on the
small shelf near the handle. While checking in,
keep the handbag/briefcase on the check-in counter,
on your side of the shelf, if there is one. If not,
sling the handbag over your shoulder, keeping the
bag in front of you. If you are carrying a briefcase,
keep it between the counter and your legs. There
should always be close physical contact.

A
large inner pocket of jacket is the ideal place
to tuck away a folder containing your passport,
ticket, cash, credit cards and traveller's cheques.
Once on board, do not forget this if you hand your
jacket to the cabin crew to hang in the locker,
as is the practice in the first-and business-class
sections.
